Eight Sidr titles have been selected by Malaysia’s Ministry of Education as recommended reading, and the same books have been taken into the collections of four state libraries: Selangor, Johor, Perak and Pulau Pinang.
The eight are My Funny Baba, Safa and the Secret of Sharing, The Whale Who Wanted to Fly, Animal Adventures, Under the Snow, The Girl Who Never Brushed Her Teeth and two further titles from the early-years list.
A ministry selection is not a review. Nobody is telling you the book is charming. What it says is narrower and more useful: this is safe to put in front of a national cohort of children, in a classroom, without an adult having to vet it first.
For a young publisher that is the harder of the two things to earn, and it is the reason we put the levelling work in before the marketing work.
Malaysian schools can now requisition these titles through the recommended list, and the state library selections mean a school that wants to try before it buys has somewhere to send its teachers. For everyone else it is a straightforward signal: these books have been read carefully by people whose job is to be careful.
